Hey there, lovebirds! So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and do a photoshoot with your significant other. Whether for engagement announcements, anniversary celebrations, or just because you want to capture some sweet moments together, posing as a couple can be exciting and slightly nerve-wracking. I’m here to offer some tips and tricks to make your photoshoot a breeze.

  1. Embrace the Awkwardness: Let’s face it, unless you’re a professional model, posing in front of a camera can feel a tad awkward at first. But guess what? That’s totally okay! Embrace the awkwardness, laugh it off, and take lots of deep breaths. Let your photographer know that you are unsure about posing. A good photographer will happily give you plenty of tips and feedback while doing the shoot. Don't be shy to discuss your insecurities and preferences so that you and your photographer are on the same page. Soon enough, you’ll find yourselves slipping into natural poses effortlessly.

  2. Research Poses: Before your shoot, spend some time on Pinterest or google searching for couples photoshoots. Start a small collection of some of your favourite pictures for a posing reference during your shoot. Be sure to share this with your photographer so you are on the same page during the shoot. Remember, it's better to choose a few poses (3-6) and not overwhelm yourself with too many options. This will be a great starting place during your shoot to help you get comfortable with the camera.

  3. Keep it Real: Authenticity is key. Instead of forcing poses that don’t feel like “you,” start with some of your inspirational poses from Pinterest and then allow yourself to relax into those poses. Take a deep breath and look into each other's eyes. You may feel awkward, but if you focus on each other, it can help you to relax and become more natural. Try a few subtle shifts in the pose before changing to a new pose to be sure you have captured a more authentic shot.

  4. Communicate: Communication is the foundation of any good relationship and is just as crucial during a photoshoot. Don’t be afraid to voice your ideas or concerns to your photographer. If there’s a particular pose you’re not comfortable with or a specific angle you love, speak up! Your photographer is there to make you look and feel amazing. It can be helpful to bring 5 - 10 examples of photos that you love the poses in; that is a great place to start, and it helps you and your photographer to be on the same page.

  5. Play with Props: Props can add a fun and personalized touch to your photoshoot. Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers, ice cream, a couple of beers or even your furry friend, props can help break the ice and inject some personality into your photos.

  6. Location, Location, Location: Choose a location that resonates with both of you. Whether it’s a scenic park, a bustling city street, or the cozy comfort of your home, the setting can greatly influence the mood and vibe of your photoshoot. Plus, being in a place you love will naturally put you at ease and make posing feel more effortless. If you are unsure of places that will work, talk to your photographer for feedback and suggestions.

  7. Get Physical: Don’t be afraid to get a little physical during your shoot. Playful interactions like tickle fights, kisses, or whispering sweet nothings can result in some seriously adorable candid shots. It's also a great way to capture a more genuine moment, as you tend to forget the camera is there.

  8. Dress to Impress: Coordinate your outfits, but don’t feel pressured to match perfectly. Opt for complementary colours and styles that reflect your personality. And remember, comfort is key! You want to feel confident and at ease in what you’re wearing. If you are unsure, you can also look online to find some inspiration and to see how different styles of clothes photograph. I can always send you some Pinterest albums with various styles so you can find some inspiration.

  9. Practice Makes Perfect: If you’re feeling particularly nervous about posing, why not practice at home beforehand? Spend some time experimenting with different poses and angles in front of a mirror. Not only will this help ease any nerves, but it’ll also give you a better idea of what poses work best for you as a couple.

  10. Have Fun with It: Last but certainly not least, have fun! Remember, this photo shoot is a celebration of your love and connection. So laugh, be silly, and cherish this special time together.
